The Artistic Biker Has Moved!

This site was supposed to mirror everything done at The Artistic Biker and I was supposed to slowly shut this site down as all of the newer posts would link back to the new digs. All of the newest stuff is at http://artisticbiker.com. See you over there!

This journal page background is a frozen watercolor experiment. I splashed watercolors on a SOAKED page and then stuck it outside in the 2°F and let the water freeze to push the watercolors around.

The planets are spray paint or acrylic and the stars are Christmas wrapping paper.

And I responded, “Pray tell, whatever do you mean?”

“Well,” I said, “we’re always trying to encourage people to create something everyday for at least 10 minutes a day.  What if we had some kind of challenge to join where we did just that?”

“I believe you have hit upon something there,” I said. “Let’s Google ‘Create Every Day’ and see what we get.”

Lo and behold I found Creative Every Day! OK, it didn’t really happen that way.  What actually happened was I saw a TON tweets on Twitter that ended with the “hashtag” #CED2010.  Now if you don’t know, a hashtag is a marker of sorts. It allows people to search on Twitter, and really any other site, for like minded themes.  Usually it’s a group name or some other way to make a search easy.  So I searched for CED2010 and that’s how I found it.  :)

From the website:  Creativity is meant in the broadest sense, so it doesn’t have to be something art related. Your creative acts could be in cooking, taking pictures, knitting, doodling, writing, dancing, decorating, singing, playing with your kids, brainstorming ideas, gardening, or making art in the form of collage, paint, or clay…or whatever!

Of course I am doing it.  Mostly because I don’t have enough to do with my spare time.  On Mondays, we are supposed to update our blogs about what we have done to be Creative Every Day!

As many problems arose in 2009 I have to say that I am glad to see that one go!  It was a rough year emotionally, financially, and professionally.  But as bad as it may have been, let me tell you some of the amazing things that came out of it.  In 2009 I lost 75 pounds, I celebrated my first anniversary of being nicotine free, and we found out that we were having another baby, this time on purpose!

And then there is The Artistic Biker.  This site launched in 2009 as art began creeping more and more into every aspect of my life.  Every time I let art and creativity shine some light on a problem, it got better.  I created this space to share that light with others.  I couldn’t be happier with the direction it’s going.  2009 saw the launch not only of this website, buy also my Flickr site where I post tons of images, YouTube Channel where I post a weekly video series, Facebook Fan Page where I post everything I find that’s art related, I am all over Twitter in the art, golf and adult entertainment (R rated, not X) twibes, and the launch of The Artistic Biker Live U-stream weekly broadcast, and creating tutorials for Artjournaling.ning I also started a Podcast and finally, a Newsletter to help followers keep track of it all. Whew!

2010 began with my beautiful young pregasaur and Girl2 bringing me coffee and biscuits in bed.  Breakfast in bed, surrounded by beautiful girls is the start of a GREAT year to come!

On New Year’s Day, I posted a youtube video for the New Year’s Art Journal entry.  While I was editing the video it was discovered that I had failed to turn the camcorder back on after pausing it for the hairdryer!  Luckily, I had the U-stream footage to fill in and complete the demonstration.  There will be a great many more videos done this way as I’m constantly improving the production quality and I’m having so much fun doing them.  You can see the video on my youtube channel HERE, or in the embedded player below:

And it’s only going to get better, people!  In January I will start teaching evening classes at our local technical school.  I have multiple products poised to launch for sale in the catalog, and I will have video classes for sale that are already in production!  Whew, that’s a lot to keep up with.

So how can you, dear reader, expect to keep up when I barely can?  How about a newsletter!  I’m starting a brand new shiny newsletter because I didn’t think I had enough to do and I want you to be able to follow it all.  Simply fill out the form below and you’ll be able to follow all of The Artistic Biker antics.

I started by separating some two-ply tissue paper and cutting it to fit the window.  I laid the pieces on a piece of wax paper and used white glue to make lace dots for curtains.  I did this first because I knew this would be one of the things that took the most time to dry.  Once I had all the dots in place I set it aside and began prepping the page in the journal.

Using my X-acto knife and a phone book to protect the other pages, I carefully cut out the glass windows.  This was the hardest part of this whole project for me because I’ve always been told not to damage books in anyway.  I just have to keep telling myself over and over this is not a book.  After cutting the windows out, I used wax paper and masking tape to create a see through window for the page.  Swabbing mineral spirits in circles into the panes give it a frosted look to complete the winter window scene.

Using the same background technique as last week, I rub in warm yellow and red on the fireplace side of the room and cool blue around the window.  This sets the overall temperature of the whole piece as well as provides lighting direction for the additional elements.  As I mixed paints for the floor, window sash, mantle, etc, I used this background as a guide for adding blue or yellow to control the lighting.  This ALSO has the added benefit of spotlighting the brightest thing in the room, the fireplace.

Using the room background as a guide, I began spray painting my elements.  For instance in the couch shown, I first highlight the paper with yellow from the fire side, blue from the window side, black from the darkest corner of the floor and red for the glow on the upper right.  Then, when I added the green, the upholstery has a texture to it because it has captured light from multiple angles.

I drew in a wallpaper background, hung some photos on the wall, added the curtains and black spray paint for shadows and WALLAH!  This was a lot of fun.  I hope some of you try it as well.  If you do, please send me pictures of it, post about it here, or better yet, film it and post it as a video response on YouTube!

I started by loosely sketching in the house and the winter scenery.  I don’t much go for photo realism in my works so I always try to keep a loose hand when working with my pencils or my brushes.  I find it gives my work a more vibrant feel.

Using a shaped mask, I lay in undertones of blue and yellow to set the temperature of the scene.  I use my acrylics mixed with water in a spray bottle to lightly spray the entire page, then I wipe the paint off with a clean towel.

This allows the colors to change the tone of my paper while not intruding into the painting.  The paints I lay over this will have a cooler or warmer feel to them as well as a more luminescent spotlight effect.

I always start with the largest brushes first and work my way down to the smaller ones.  That way I can save the “neat” parts for last and maintain interest throughout the painting.  It also ensures that the details don’t get overwhelmed by washes of color.
